A whole mountain full of fun: The new “Funmountain” in Obergurgl

Everybody’s guaranteed to get their kicks at the Diamond of the Alps

This winter it certainly pays off to take a closer look away from common slopes at Obergurgl –also for the non-freeriders among you! A total of four fun facilities are waiting to be discovered – two of which are brand-new and perfectly round off the overall offer of the “Fun Mountain” Obergurgl. This doesn’t just mean that there is a quite a range of different facilities, but also that every single guest is guaranteed to get their money’s worth.

Connect Four!

If you bring your whole family, it’s your best bet to start off at the Audi quattro funslope near the Festkoglbahn. Or maybe you want to take your first dip into the world of freestyle? Just get on the Bruggenbodenbahn and make your way to the Familypark.

Advanced park riders definitely shouldn’t miss out on the creative setup new Snowpark Obergurgl, which can be reached via the Steinmannbahn. If speedy downhill runs are your cup of tea, you will feel right at home at the brand-new Funcross. It’s located next to the snowpark and boasts all kinds of waves, steep curves, jumps and even a slope cop, who’s ready and set to measure your speed.

Diamond Girls Crew – the Women behind the Shape Tool

“Shaped by girls only“ – that’s the motto of the Funmountain Obergurgl – this means that all of the mountain’s facilities are in the firm hands of women. They’re maintained by a 6-headed shape crew led by park designer Francine Boer and head-shaperess Lana Behla. The girls call themselves Diamond Girls Crew. Lana was kind enough to give us a little insight about her job.

What do you like best about the outdoor office?

Lana: Well, you’re always working outside in the fresh air, and you have to move a lot. So there’s certainly no need to go to the gym. Basically, you’re working out all day long at your personal “gym in the mountains”, so to speak. Since the four facilities are spread around the entire ski resort, we’re constantly riding around on our snowboards. While other people have to pay for that, for us it’s just part of our job

Let’s talk about the four facilities – what’s the greatest challenge when it comes to the maintenance?

Lana: It’s quite a challenge to coordinate the crew, so that everything works out perfectly. The timing has to be right – for example, when you close one of the facilities at 4 pm, you can’t get another one.

The cooperation is also an important aspect – not just internally among the crew, but with everybody who works at the resort. The lift attendants, for example, let us take a ride into the mountains in the morning, so that we arrive at the parks on time. In the evening we contact staff members who operate the snow groomers and ask if anybody is doing their rounds with the winch and if it’s safe to ride down to the valley. All this works out very smoothly and the vibe is just amazing – we’re like a big family. Everybody’s a part, from the baker where we get our breakfast in the morning to attendants at the draglift.

Events – QParks Tour Finals and Funcross Race Obergurgl

Besides the traditional Girls Shred Session, two additional premieres take place at the new facilities. On March 8 2018, the first Funcross Race ever happened at Funcross Obergurgl.

And the QParks Tour, the biggest continuous contest series for young talent throughout the Alps, will make a stop in Obergurgl. That’s a rather special premiere – because the event on March 31 2018 is not just an ordinary tour stop – the grand finals of the tour will take place at the Diamond of the Alps.
